Safaricom Chief Executive Officer, Robert ‘Bob’ Collymore died on Monday morning at his home in Nairobi. The Guyanese-born British businessman had been battling cancer since 2017.
“In October 2017, Bob proceeded to the UK to receive treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and returned in July 2018 to resume duties. He has been undergoing treatment for this condition since then in different hospitals and most recently at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. In recent weeks, his condition worsened and he succumbed to cancer at his home in the early hours of Monday 1st July 2019. Bob Collymore leaves behind a wife and four children.” says Safaricom Chairman, Nicholas Ng’ang’a in a statement released shortly after Collymore’s death.
Kenyans passed their condolences through social media, many terming him as the man who placed Kenya on the global map of communication and tech innovations. Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho expressed his grief in a tweet saying: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing on of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore. His leadership at the most successful company in Kenya will greatly be missed. My condolences go out to his family and the entire Safaricom fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
